Chocolate for breakfast!

Listen up chocolate lovers…I wanted to quickly share with you one of my favourite breakfasts right now and this is a fab, sexy breakfast to kick-start your metabolism in the best possible way! I’ve been struggling lately to find something quick, easy and nutritious especially since a recent food allergy test revealed the thing I’m most allergic to in the world is apparently eggs! 😦 Anyway, more about this to come in a later post. I don’t generally have a sweet tooth but when I wake up in the morning I do tend to crave something sweet rather than savoury and my biggest downfall in the nutrition department has to be Chocolate (other than Wine)! Therefore, this healthy, chocolatey smoothy seems to have all bases covered. I usually mix this up in my Nutri-Bullet but actually a cheap, electric stick mixer or normal blender will do the job.

Good quality ingredients are not cheap but should last a while and have lots of uses and health benefits.

Ingredients

Dairy free milk alternative. I like to use Koko coconut milk but almond milk or another dairy substitute will do

1 level scoop (approx 25 grams) chocolate protein powder. I use Solgar Whey to go whey protein

A handful of organic spinach

2 heaped teaspoons of raw, organic cacao powder (not to be confused with cocoa powder or normal drinking chocolate

1 heaped teaspoon of raw, organic maca powder

2 tablespoons of chia seeds

2 large teaspoons of organic coconut oil

1 teaspoon of raw Manuka honey

A sprinkling of ground cinnamon

I try to put the chia seeds and some of the coconut milk in first to allow the seeds to soften and swell. Bung the rest on top, give it a quick whizz and you’re ready to go. It couldn’t be quicker or easier to prepare in the morning and I find it really satisfies my craving for something sweet. Also being packed with protein its great for your metabolism and blood-sugar levels and should keep you full for a while. It’s also a fairly healthy start to the day as it has green, leafy veg in the form of spinach, coconut oil which, as mentioned in a previous post has many health benefits, maca powder which is a “super root” thought to increase energy and even improve libido! Chia seeds are rich in fibre. Manuka honey has strong healing properties even being tested for use against MRSA in hospitals and cinnamon is a fantastic spice which amongst other things can help control blood sugar levels. If you want to make your smoothy thicker and creamier you can add avocado for an extra nutrient boost. So for all you chocoholics out there, you really can have your cake and eat it too (ok, smoothy)!
